A Hearth in the Deep

A Hearth in the Deep

$3.99

Grenda Malt-Beard spent fifty years as a Deep-Walker, mapping the most dangerous unlit caverns beneath Emberhold. When a final expedition leaves her with a bad knee and a craving for quiet, she cashes out her hazard pay and buys an abandoned storage cavern on the edge of the hold's commercial district.

Her plan is simple: open a cozy tavern and inn for returning delvers, tired adventurers, and the local working class. She names it "The Cask and Anvil."

Simple lasts about a day.

Getting the ancient magma-vent hearth lit requires help from a one-eyed mushroom farmer who's been her best friend — and biggest critic — for forty years. Her first hire is a runaway gem-cutter's apprentice who drops everything except her enthusiasm. An elven merchant gets snowed in for the winter and drinks all the spiced cider. A rival Guild-run tavern tries to steal her customers. And a grumpy council dwarf with a clipboard seems personally determined to shut her down.

But when the community rallies behind the Cask and Anvil, Grenda discovers that the hardest adventure isn't surviving the deep dark — it's building something worth coming home to.
