Brynja Stoneheart is the High Scribe of the Auditors — meticulous, disciplined, carrying the weight of a past failure she's never forgiven herself for. She's spent her life enforcing the hold's laws with absolute precision. Then the High Council hands her something no amount of precision can prepare her for: a Decree of Betrothal to Gunnar Emberhold, the chaos-driven Master-Architect of the magma-forges.

Gunnar didn't ask for this marriage either. His experimental forge is on the brink of being shut down by the Council. Elder Rurik Flint-Skin offers him an ultimatum: accept the Guild-Marriage to the auditor who's been a thorn in his side for years, or watch his crew lose everything.

Neither wanted this. Neither can refuse. The betrothal was designed as a political leash — the Scriptorium's rigidity anchoring the Forge's ambition. But as Brynja reads Gunnar's file and is horrified by his chaotic record, and Gunnar forges a raw-iron betrothal token infused with everything he can't say out loud, both begin to suspect that the Council's trap might be something neither of them expected.

The story ends at the top of the Great Stair, with Brynja in ceremonial robes, looking down toward the smoke and fire of the lower levels, about to meet her betrothed for the first time.
